Historical Analysis
How to leverage Barocline enhanced historical gridded and station datasets
Gridded vs. station data
| Gridded (ERA5/GFS) | Station observations | |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Every point on the globe | Specific station locations |
| Resolution | 15km grid cells | Point measurements |
| History | 1991-present | 1950-present |
| Strengths | Spatially complete, consistent | Ground truth, high temporal resolution |
| Best for | Climate trends, area analysis | Specific site validation, hourly data |
Multi-year comparison (interannual mode)
The gridded_history_15km tool supports interannual mode for comparing the same date range across multiple years:
"Compare January temperatures in Dallas over the last 10 years"High-resolution data (2km)
For CONUS locations needing finer spatial detail, use gridded_history_location_2km. Currently limited to WIND and TEMPERATURE perils.
Station field packages
Station data offers specialized packages:
- meteorological — full weather variables
- aviation — ceiling, visibility, flight category
- agriculture — soil temperature, growing degree days
